079: Kat's Knick Knacks: Friendship Tokens
It's been a while since I featured products from Kat's Knick Knacks (Kat's invention store) and I decided to drop the punchlines for a while and turn Kat's creativity loose.
I kinda wish I could sell products like her... *wishful thinking*...

070: Studies
I believe I've said this before but I'll say it again. In no way am I anti-formal education. On the contrary, I LOVE it! However, I don't believe academic grades are the sole basis for being "successful" in life. It has always been the inner vision, among other things, that is the key.

I started this cartoon with plenty of doubt but ended with me being teary-eyed in sympathy for the two cute snakes in love.

First of all, LoveJoy isn't dumb; she's actually the smartest girl in class. Second, I don't think blondes are dumb at all!

This was inspired by Pope Francis' supposed "selfie". Who said men of the cloth couldn't be wacky, too?

There was a book in the Buddhist temple I frequent about a vegetarian lion. I wasn't sure if this strip was inspired by it but at least I know such creatures exist.

Mermaid Tale
I made this a while back and for the longest time thought it sucked. So I put it aside thinking I will never, ever post it. Funny now that when I viewed it, I thought it's really a decent, simple, feel-good comic strip and hey, that's not bad, isn't it?

065: Special Dish
When I was in high school, we had an Agriculture course as an alternative to Home Economics (coincidentally, both courses were highlighted in this cartoon, but that is not the point). During our Agriculture Finals, each and everyone has to behead a chicken and "defeather" (?) them. Scaredy cat that I am, I cried and was led off. Good thing I passed the course anyway-- one of my best friends had to behead my chicken for me.

060: Sam
Long ago, The Clothes Horse featured some sort of movie in her blog with a weird wanted ad in it. I can't remember for the life of me what the title of the movie was (and I'm too lazy to even search for it) but in case the ad here sounded plagiarized, I want to put it out there that this comic strip is inspired by it and maybe of Superman, too.

055: Canoe Ride
It took a while for me to think of a cartoon. I've been caught up in some "serious" stuff that the mood rubbed off during my cartoon-making hours. So after a couple of tries of hatching up witty, complicated cartoons, I now have a cartoon I'm quite happy with -- non-witty, non-complicated and a no-brainer.
Sometimes, light thinking is still key.

Sewing
This year I am adamant on learning how to properly sew clothing. Let's see how it goes but a word of advice:
Don't be a cheapskate like me and try to learn sewing using a handheld sewing machine. Or if you're absolutely sure it will work for you, invest on at least a branded handheld one. Thank goodness it's just Php150 (around USD4), bought from Divisoria!
Instead, just buy a basic sewing machine. I just bought mine and I'm still learning how to use it properly *excited*.
Here's my first learning project. A scrunchy. :P
Do I need to write a tutorial for this? Probably not as I just made it along as I go. I cut a 12"x 3" piece of cloth lying around the house. I also used a 4" garter. Then I just sew the edges together. Finished!

001: Family Tree
Inspired by the song I'm My Own Grandpa by Ray Stevens. Here's the lyrics--
Many, many years ago when I was twenty-three
I was married to a widow who was pretty as could be
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red
My father fell in love with her and soon they too were wed
This made my dad my son-in-law and really changed my life
For now my daughter was my mother, 'cause she was my father's wife
And to complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy
My little baby then became a brother-in-law to dad
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad
For if he were my uncle, then that also made him brother
Of the widow's grownup daughter, who was of course my step-mother
Father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run
And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter's son
My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue
Because although she is my wife, she's my grandmother too
Now if my wife is my grandmother, then I'm her grandchild
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild
'Cause now I have become the strangest 'case you ever saw
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa, I'm my own grandpa
It sounds funny, I know but it really is so
I'm my own grandpa

DIY: Handmade Envelopes
Along with my journal covers,
one DIY project I do on a semi-regular basis are envelopes. While I
hardly use postal mail anymore, I find them useful when giving cash
gifts to people. Definitely better and more personalized than a regular
white, blank envelope.
What you’ll need:
For the envelope pattern:
Old Cardboard
Ruler
Pencil
Scissors
For the envelope:
Photos/Pictures -- I always use big, glossy calendar photographs
Pencil
Scissors
Glue
Creating the Envelope Pattern:
The
envelope pattern will be your guideline in making your envelope. This
is mostly a one-time procedure since the pattern could be used over and
over again.
While
you could design your own pattern(horizontal, vertical, big, small,
rounded flap, etc.), I’ll give you mine for illustration. Make sure that the pattern has extra allowance for folding and gluing
the panels together wherever necessary. For the pattern below, all 0.5'' measurements are panels where glue will be placed.
Front Piece |
Back Piece. The cut for the gluing panels are slightly inclined at the top. |
Measure and cut the pattern out from the cardboard.
Creating the Envelope:
1. Trace the pattern over your photo/picture. Make sure to trace over the
details that you would want visible on the back and front panels of your
envelope.
2. Cut out the envelope pieces
3. Fold and glue the pieces together
Folded! |
Done!
Finished product |
Now I have plenty of envelopes--
I hardly think envelopes warrant making a post over but I made a bunch just recently and thought “oh well, will post”.
