016: The Lost Travellers

I am introducing a new character named Richie, a tikbalang.  I believe Tikbalangs are uniquely Filipino, unlike our Itim na Dwende which has the equivalent "elf" in other countries or Multo which has the equivalent "ghost" in other country.  Obviously, there are some differences (e.g. I have always thought of elves as Christmas Elves; unlike the mischievous kind of dwarves in Philippine folklore) but nevertheless, they kinda have the same roots, I guess.  But tikbalang!  The opposite of centaurs in Greek Mythology and fawns of the Narnia Chronicles... completely Filipino.

Anyway, one of the things I have always heard about Tikbalangs is that they could lure travellers into a trap and make them travel around in circles.  The only remedy to this space warp kinda thing is for the travellers to turn their shirts inside-out... ok, I dunno the reason for that but hey, it doesn't have to make sense!  Numerous times during family trips whenever we seem to be going around in circles I always have that nudge to turn my shirt inside-out... completely superstitious but what have I to lose?

015: Art Attack!

I love, love, love the Art Attack shows.  I do not watch them now (isn't it awesome that the show is still alive and kicking??) but I remember thinking back then: "How the hell do they make those DIYs look professional?  If I were the one to do those projects, they would just look like a big, fat mess!".  Or something to that effect.

So this post is dedicated to that show.  I still kind of wish I could do those projects so easily, but alas, I guess I would stick to what I do (kinda) best... amateur cartoons.

BTW, Happy Father's Day to all dads out there!

Filipino Household Handicrafts

Just a break from the usual.

As I get older, I am loving more and more Filipino Handicrafts.  The materials are truly Filipino and quite creative.

Here are some jar-like thingamajigs.  I am guessing they're made of abaca but I am not completely sure.

A bowl-like thing made out of coconut shell, too--

Until next time.  This is truly a lazy Sunday and I am happy to just post some pictures.

Profile Card: Mutya

Mutya is my first ever character as seen on this post (jeez, what a weird-looking comic strip that was).  Back then I've always seen her as the central character and Kat is her hippie sidekick.  But as characters emerge and storylines become a little more diverse, is there even such a thing as a central character?  I guess so but diversity will always be nice.

Our mythical heroes play sports, too!
